SCHOOL & LIBRARY VISITS

BRING SETH TO YOUR SCHOOL OR LIBRARY OR DAYCARE

Before Seth went into publishing, he spent years as a camp counselor at an EDUCATIONAL CAMP, which means he’s become quite adept at tricking kids into learning through fun, interactive games and activities. He also ran a PHYSICS CIRCUS, performing educational feats of scientific magic to crowded school auditoriums. Bed of nails, liquid nitrogen sledgehammering, bubble art. While some of the material from those circus events are no longer OK for ‘insurance reasons’, he’d be more than happy to customize workshops on fun number and scientific lessons. Or, he can use an appropriately reverent voice when reading his book for Story Time.

DETAILS

A school or library visit can vary drastically considering the age possibilities.  For youngsters Seth can come into a class, read his book and perform a singular interactive expansion on the concept of big numbers. The presentation would take no more than 30 minutes, to fit with their attention span. Or he can speak to a larger group, sharing cool generalized physics and numerical concepts, drawing on volunteers and linking to one of the books he’s written. Think Bill Nye meets picture books.  For high schoolers, Seth can lead workshops on creative writing, on digging into the root of story and finding a way to make it clear, quick, concise and, of course, fun.

Contact Seth if you are unsure of what works best for you. He’s up for most things, and wants to help your curriculum move forward in an entertaining, educational way.

THE OPTIONS

SLEIGHT OF NUMBERS
Size: 5 to 500
Length: 30 minutes.

A wow-filled, interactive presentation of numbers, aimed to let kids wrap their mind around surprisingly large spaces.  From a jar of jelly beans* to a never-ending rootbeer float*, from a number that doesn’t stop to the individual in all of us, this presentation helps the young (and the old) visualize exactly what a number means. Big numbers are so abstract, but after this lesson, your students should be able to at least compare the number of stars visible to the naked eye to the number of objects we shove into a big jar.

*Seth can, of course, substitute for healthier and (potentially) just-as-fun items.

MAKE YOUR OWN PICTURE BOOK
Size: Up to 25
Length: 45-60 minutes.

Beginning with a reading from Seth’s book, we then move into a class-generated picture book, a Mad-Libs for young creatives and artists. Then we separate into smaller groups intent on creating more focused stories, all ready to take home to the parents and find a permanent place on the fridge.
WRITER’S WORKSHOP: How to Find an Idea (Grades 7-12)
Size: Up to 24
Length: 45-60 minutes.

Seth taught creative writing and college essay applications to 9th and 10th graders and the one thing he learned is that everyone has a story.  Drawing from his YA books and his job as a literary agent, Seth will help discuss how to find, nurture and grow an idea.

WRITER’S WORKSHOP: Short Short Stories (Grades 7-12):

Size: Up to 24
Length: 45-60 minutes.

An interactive and fun and vocal workshop on creating a complete story out of almost no pages. Sharing is part of the drill, here.  Think Moth, for kids

SKYPE

Seth’s game for Skype, gchat, Facetime, whatever may work best for those who can’t afford to bring him in!
